摘要
Students will write more effective term papers with this guide to 500 term paper ideas--as well as a listing of appropriate print and nonprint sources-- on twentieth-century U.S. history. This guide presents entries on 100 of the most important events and developments in twentieth-century U.S. history organized in chronological order. Each entry consists of a short description of the event, followed by five specific suggestions for term papers about the event, and a wide-ranging annotated bibliography of 15-35 books, articles, videos, and a web site appropriate for student research. In every case the emphasis is on recent and up-to-date material, as well as landmark works and primary sources. Every entry contains a video and concludes with a recommended web site, producing a multimedia approach designed to appeal to the current information-gathering habits and preferences of young people.
From the Spanish-American War to the creation of NAFTA, the 100 events and developments cover political, social, economic, and cultural issues. The work has been designed to meet the needs of the U.S. history curriculum. Term paper topic ideas offer students thought-provoking suggestions that are challenging and develop critical thinking skills. The annotated bibliography is organized into reference sources, general sources, specialized sources, biographical sources, periodical articles, recommended videos and World Wide Web sites. All items are readily available in school, public, and academic library collections. This unique guide is valuable not only to students, but to teachers and librarians who guide students in research, and is an excellent purchasing guide for librarians who serve student needs.

《书目》(Booklist)书评
The purpose of this book is to assist high-school and undergraduate researchers in both selecting appropriate research topics and locating useful bibliographical sources. Two criteria were used to select the 100 important historical events: the centrality of the event to twentieth-century U.S. history and its relative interest to contemporary students. Although an attempt was made to arrange events in chronological order, some are difficult to place because they span such a large amount of time or have no date at all. The list begins with the Spanish-American War (1898) and ends with the North American Free Trade Agreement (1993). Each entry starts with a short summary of the historical event and its context. This is followed by a list of five research topic suggestions. The next sections list resources under headings such as "Reference Sources," "Biographical Sources," "Periodical Sources," "Audiovisual Sources," and "World Wide Web." The audiovisual and Web categories are the only ones that appear in each entry. Often it is suggested that the reader refer to sources in a related entry. There are from 15 to 35 sources provided for each event, and each source is annotated. Most have copyright dates from 1970^-1997, although some are reprints of older titles (e.g., Joseph McCarthy's McCarthyism: The Fight for America is a 1977 reprint of the 1952 edition). The topics suggested here encourage critical thinking and analysis, rather than a mere retelling. The events listed offer a full spectrum of historical and social issues: the Ku Klux Klan, assassinations of presidents, the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court appointment hearings, the Great Depression, the United Nations, the My Lai massacre, and the 1913 Armory Show that showcased modern art. The annotations are helpful, and the sources should be available at most large libraries. High schools that have advanced placement history courses or who encourage students to take AP history tests will need this book. It is an excellent addition to high-school, public, and academic libraries as a resource for teachers and students and a collection development tool for librarians.

Muccigrosso (history), Blazek (information studies), and Maggio (librarian), all authors of well-regarded bibliographies on 20th-century American history, offer much in this handy volume to undergraduates and to those assisting them as they begin research. They provide a chronological arrangement of the 100 most significant events of the 20th century with brief introductions, followed by specific suggestions for related paper topics and annotated bibliographies of current and classic reference and general sources, including relevant audiovisual materials and Web sites. Their book is valuable in conjunction with other bibliographies, e.g., The American Historical Association's Guide to Historical Literature, ed. by Mary Beth Norton and Pamela Gerardi (CH, Dec'95), and Blazek and Anna H. Perrault's United States History: A Selective Guide to Information Sources (CH, Jun'94). This monograph's unique scope and very current entries make it helpful to students expected to write a paper but with no idea where to begin, and to seasoned researchers who wish to check for current titles. Highly recommended for libraries that serve undergraduates. T. McDevitt; Indiana University of Pennsylvania
