《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 6^-10. In 10 slender volumes, this encyclopedia introduces, defines, and discusses key words and phrases relevant to the study of English. The entries are arranged alphabetically, and a number of concepts from various categories are touched upon, including spelling and vocabulary, grammar and usage, thinking skills, mechanics and punctuation, research, test-taking, and words commonly confused (such as desert/dessert). The coverage seems spotty at times, with entries for the Caldecott Medal and the Pulitzer Prize, but not the National Book Award; for concrete noun, but not concrete poem. Although the entry for proofreading symbols helpfully shows what they mean and how they are used, it includes only 10 symbols, leaving out such common proofreading marks as the one for capitalization. Still, students or librarians looking for a single, nontechnical resource for a variety of questions related to the English language may find the set useful. --Carolyn Phelan
