摘要
The increasing interest in American Indians-their histories, cultures, and contemporary concerns-and the enormous quantity of material published on the subject in recent years have precipitated the need for this research guide. Focusing on Native Americans in the United States, Canada, and Alaska, this work follows a teacher/librarian's approach to locating and using major sources for information and research. It covers directories, handbooks, encyclopedias, bibliographies, biographical sources, periodicals, government publications, periodical indexes, and computer databases for research. Extensive coverage of electronic resources gives researchers many venues for rapid access to the literature in a variety of subject fields that pertain to American Indians. An important research tool for librarians, college students, and other researchers, this guide allows users to efficiently survey the literature and learn of the options available for locating information on specific topics in the field.

《书目》(Booklist)书评
This bibliographic guide is a treasury of information for the college student, researcher, or librarian. Focusing primarily on North America--with the Indians of Mexico and Central and South America covered only if they are included in the sources listed--this book describes almost 400 information sources published from the 1970s through 1993. White, whose expertise is evident throughout the book, is the bibliographer for American Indian studies at San Diego State University. Chapters list guides to the literature, directories, bibliographies, encyclopedias, periodicals, biographical sources, government documents, and microforms. In most chapters, materials are listed in order of importance. The critical annotations tell how to use each source and its advantages and disadvantages. Electronic tools are noted when appropriate. Some unique features are the book's list of bibliographies arranged by tribe and its section on American Indian periodicals and newspapers; an appendix of LC subject headings related to this field adds more avenues for exploration. Author-title and subject indexes make access easy. Recommended for the academic or public library where patrons are looking for keys to extensive research on the American Indian. Among many recent publications on Native Americans, this guide stands out as a simple, useful introduction to sources published primarily between 1970 and 1993. Intended for college students, librarians, and selected researchers, it focuses principally on Indians of North America, touching on many aspects of their history and life. Organized by type of publication, the volume includes guides, directories, encyclopedias, bibliographies, biographical sources, theses, newsletters, government publications, microform collections, and computer databases. Periodicals and newspapers, together with indexes for both, are also included. Sources range from specific (e.g., A.E. Hippler's The Subarctic Athabascans, 1974) to general (Abstracts in Anthropology, 1970- ). Most entries are amply annotated. An initial four-page section that describes how to locate books by topic within the Library of Congress (LC) classification and an appendix on LC subject headings complete the volume. Author/title and subject indexes provide access to the listings. More up-to-date than similar 1980s guides (M.L. Haas's Indians of North America: Methods and Sources for Library Research, CH Jul'84, and A.B. Hirschfelder's Guide to Research on North American Indians, CH, Apr'84), the present volume also includes longer bibliographies than other recent directories and encyclopedias. M. R.
