《书目》(Booklist)书评
As stated in the preface, this book is a hybrid of the two lines of Writer's Digest Books, publishers of Writer's Market: "it has some aspects of a market book and some features of a `how to write' book." There are five main sections: "Trends in Crime Fiction," written by Michael Seidman, mystery editor at Walker & Company, surveys recent developments, such as the popularity of the female PI and the growing number of mysteries featuring homosexual protagonists, serial killers, or historical settings. In "Writing the Mystery," several writers offer suggestions on plotting and characterization. This section also features an interview with Marcia Muller. "The Markets," the longest section of the book, discusses the basics of manuscript submission and describes the primary and secondary markets for short stories, novels, and articles and reviews. This section also gives information on foreign markets and a list of literary agents. Profiles of the 50 or so book publishers listed include categories the publisher accepts, address, contact information, terms, and also, not infrequently, an interview with one of the editors or a list of tips and taboos. Symbols at the beginning of each entry indicate whether a publisher is a big market for mysteries, is most open to established authors, or is open to unagented or unpublished authors. "The Sources" provides information on mystery magazines, mystery and crime writers' organizations, mystery conventions and workshops, mystery and crime bookstores, and awards. The editors queried a number of mystery writers on some of their favorite books for "For Your Reference." This section also lists some relevant reference books and guides (mostly other Writer's Digest publications), gives information on homicide investigations, and provides a glossary of mystery terms. The book concludes with a general index and a category index. Mystery Writer's Market Place and Sourcebook contains a wealth of information presented in an accessible way and enlivened with many insider tips and comments from editors and writers themselves. Much of the information will interest the mystery fan as well as the aspiring writer. Recommended for all libraries with extensive mystery or writer's reference collections. (Reviewed Dec. 15, 1993)

Writer's Digest here provides several features that will be useful for aspiring mystery writers. Mystery experts have contributed how-to essays on such topics as plotting, creating the mystery hero, and a day in the life of a private eye. The section on markets is a directory listing publishers who specialize in mysteries or trade publishers who accept mystery submissions. Each entry contains publisher name, address, mystery editor, press profile, information on how to submit manuscripts, royalty terms, and special tips for the writer. There are additional listings for magazines, organizations, conventions, bookstores and awards related to mystery fiction, as well as a glossary of mystery terms and an index listing publishers and sources by categories of mystery. Useful for beginning mystery writers; not an essential purchase for libraries. E. Winter; California State University, Bakersfield
