This dictionary contains biographical information on 500 individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of psychology. This is a well-researched, expertly written, and well-structured resource. The purpose is to provide a thorough reference that includes basic information, influences, and the overall significance each individual has made to the field. The information is smartly organized alphabetically and allows the reader to access specific individuals easily. The editor's objectives are unquestionably met. As this dictionary is quite user friendly, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and academics will find this book to be a worthwhile addition to their personal libraries. The editors have an impressive academic background which is indicative of their strong knowledge of psychology. The editors and their contributors undeniably demonstrate their expertise and deliver a needed biographical dictionary. The dictionary includes profiles of over 500 individuals who have made significant contributions to psychology and includes a comprehensive listing of each person's pertinent information including but not limited to nationality, professional interests, education, appointments and awards, and principal publications. Readers will find the inclusion of further reading at the end of each entry to be extremely helpful. The four separate indexes (Names, Interests, Institutions, Key Terms) are not only useful but a grand addition to such a worthy text. The list of acronyms also is quite helpful. It is evident that a substantial amount of time, determination, dedication, and intellect is contained within this biographical dictionary. As both a researcher and professor of psychology, each quarter I assign my introductory psychology students the task of researching and presenting on a notable figure in psychology. I am pleased that there is now a resource that can help aid my students and also recognizes the importance of the various contributors to psychology. Here is a valuable tool, listing more than 500 individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of psychology. The list of entries was carefully selected by a team of more than 20 experts, making this a representative sample of the most influential people in the field. The scope is worldwide and includes contemporary psychologists as well as historical figures. In addition to the famous and familiar, coverage includes such names as Alexander Bain, a nineteenth-century Scot credited with writing the first systematic psychological text; Eustace Christopher Poulton, a pioneer in the field of ergonomics; and Magdalen Dorothea Vernon, whose writings on perception were required reading for mid-century psychology students. Each entry is written by a subject specialist. Some entries were prepared by the editors; in these cases, no names appear at the ends of entries, as they do for those entries provided by expert contributors. Length ranges from one-half page to slightly over two pages. Each entry follows the same format, including general biographical information and pertinent details about the subject's work in the field of psychology. Two especially valuable components of each entry are a list of each subject's principal publications and suggestions for further reading. The further readings are primarily academic and university press publications and articles from specialized journals. In addition to an index of names, this work also includes an index of interests in which key names are listed with each area of interest; an index of institutions, identifying the individual(s) associated with each institution; and an index of key terms, identifying the individuals associated with each key term. Although it has the one small disadvantage of not containing illustrations of any of the subjects, this is a valuable tool for providing biographical information on renowned individuals in the discipline of psychology throughout the world. The history of psychology is best told by focusing on the people who have made lasting contributions to the field. For this notable book, the authors culled thousands of possible names from the bibliographies of histories of psychology, textbooks, and reference works. These were then subjected to peer review and citation analysis to find the 500 most prominent men and women in the field. The time span covered is 1794 to the present. Each entry includes birthplace, nationality, interests, education, appointments and awards, principal publications, and brief signed biographies that emphasize intellectual development rather than personal history. There are four indexes: interests, institutions, key terms, and, most interestingly, names, the latter allowing users to trace patterns of influence. A few mistakes and some inclusion quibbles (Niels Bohr, a psychologist?) do not mar the overall excellent quality. The recent notables and the emphasis on contributions rather than personalities make this a good choice for upper-division undergraduates and graduate students. N. J. Bird; Teikyo Post University

By surveying histories, psychology encyclopedias, introductory textbooks, and the awards lists of psychological associations, the editorstwo British professors of psychology and an Irish journalisthave compiled the biographical details of 500 persons who made important contributions to modern psychology from the mid-19th century to the early 1990s. Signed entries, written by an international team of contributors, vary in length from a paragraph to several pages for prominent individuals. Though the editors attempted worldwide representation, the majority of individuals profiled are European or North American. Each entry gives name, date and place of birth and death, nationality, main area of interest in psychology, education, appointments, honors and awards, principal publications, further reading (sources of critical, appreciative, or analytical accounts of the person's main work), intellectual development, and main ideas, including an assessment of influence. The volume concludes with four indexes: by name, interests (using the American Psychological Association categories), institution, and key terms and concepts. Unfortunately, the choice to emphasize academic and professional work excludes individuals who have distinguished themselves in popular and applied psychology. Still, this well-organized work is much more up-to-date than comparable resources, and the entries are well written, hitting all the salient points.
