O'Dell begins with a short history of gender equality and then discusses the development of a collection with an emphasis on nonsexist literature (both fiction and nonfiction) and periodicals. Programming ideas, while relatively easy to plan, especially with the aid of volunteers, are exclusive to girls. Ideas for outreach and recruiting volunteers are mentioned. While some of these ideas are not necessarily gender specific, all of the resources in the bibliographies and Webliographies are. Bibliographies include "Essential Nonfiction" (biographies, titles on self-esteem, careers, and women's history) and "Essential Fiction" (adventures, historical fiction, romance, mysteries, and other major genres), and "Films and Video Series Relevant to Teen Girls." This book will be useful to librarians with the very specific goal of attracting adolescent girls to the library.-Marlyn K. Roberts, City of Long Beach Public Library, CA (c) Copyright 2010. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
In a comprehensive guide to providing library services to teen girls in a public library setting, chapters cover such topics as collection development (including an excellent annotated listing of fiction, nonfiction, periodicals, and films essential to the young adult collection as well as collection development resources); programming; girls and technology; volunteers; collaboration; and outreach. Practical information on each theme is provided, along with tips and suggestions, sample program ideas and publicity, sample surveys and evaluations, and a detailed bibliography at the end of each section. Although it is written for public librarians, school librarians looking for programming ideas and collection development support will find this title useful. A well-written and highly functional resource that provides the necessary tools for working with teen girls. -- RBB Copyright 2003 Booklist
