Drawing from the literature of anthropology, the health sciences, psychology, social work, veterinary medicine, and related disciplines, Allen provides a compilation of the important literature in the developing research area currently known as the ``human-animal bond.'' This bibliography of 819 entries includes monographs, chapters, serials, and articles. Allen includes works pertaining to animals in their rehabilitative roles with psychiatric patients and other hospitalized and institutionalized individuals; also included are publications about pets as companions to healthy people (health maintenance). Allen's bibliography cites publications about pet-owner attitudes and responsibilities, animal control, humane education, public health and pets, and the veterinarian's role in counseling bereaved pet owners. The appendix identifies several recently founded centers, foundations, and programs for the study of human-animal interaction. Author and title indexes are useful for easy access to the included sources; annotations are straightforward and range in length from one to several sentences, followed by the number of references. Appropriate periodical indexes are cited.
