This introduction to the study of politics explores the multiple meanings of "governance" as well as the several senses of what it means to be a "subject." It takes the reader on a journey through and across the domains of law and institutions, markets and power, and culture and identity, and shows how the understanding of any one of these domains demands an understanding of them all. The path through these related regions is marked by regular encounters with leading and competing thinkers--from the expected, such as James Madison, Robert Dahl, Michel Foucault, and Adam Smith, to the unexpected, such as Joseph Raz, Lisa Disch, Doug Henwood, and Joan Scott--that encourage the reader to evaluate their arguments for their internal coherence and explanatory power. Gabriel Lobo Laso de la Vega (1555-1615) es poco conocido en la actualidad. Pero en su época era un poeta con renombre y respetado por Cervantes, Lope de Vega, López Maldonado y Padilla. Este libro intenta dar nueva luz sobre su arte y la visión de España a través de sus obras impresas. El primer ensayo estudia temas grecorromanos del Romancero de 1587 aplicables alegóricamente a la España de Felipe II. Este romancero describe la España anterior a la Armada Invencible con optimismo. Pero en el Manojuelo de Romances (1601), Lobo la ve acosada por enemigos exteriores e interiores y por una corrupción moral celestinesca. Hasta la vida campesina se representa de manera soez al estilo de Brueghel. El tercer capítulo describe la vida de las academias, de las cuales son socios Lobo, los susodichos amigos poetas y sus protectores moriscos: los Granada Venegas. El último ensayo incide en las relaciones entre Lobo y la familia de Hernán Cortes. Lobo escribe con cierto éxito artístico y económico obras apoteósicas sobre Cortés para que Felipe II les devuelva los bienes secuestrados a causa de la Conjuración de 1565-1566 en México.

Balbus's approach to US political/legal institutions, economic markets, and individual and group identity is oriented from one direction by soft Marxism and from another by the psychoanalytic perspectives of Melanie Klein. Patterned on a required course developed and taught by more than half the faculty in his department, Balbus's iteration is powered by a passion for equality and a demand for democratic politics as reparation for past harms of the privileged and powerful. The election of Obama is figured as an example of the latter. The text will better serve as an example of the radical edge of the academic left confronting America than as a summary and compendium of current scholarship in political theory and comparative politics. A glossary identifies more than 60 authors, 2 or 3 of whom are highlighted and contrasted in each of the 28 chapters. In the ending, Balbus (Univ. of Illinois, Chicago) soars beyond these sources, however, into a testament that dreams of America's redemption through a synthesis of deep ecology and collective 12-step therapy that together would rid the culture of capitalist hubris and the addictive desires of possessive individualism.
