摘要
First published in 1976, the Dictionary of Philosophy has established itself as the best available text of its kind, explaining often unfamiliar, complicated and diverse terminology. Thoroughly revised and expanded, this fourth edition provides authoritative and rigorous definitions of a broad range of philosophical concepts.
Concentrating on the Western philosophical tradition, The Routledge Dictionary of Philosophy offers an illuminating and informed introduction to the central issues, ideas and perspectives in core fields such as metaphysics, epistemology, and logic. It includes concise biographical entries for more than one hundred major philosophers, from Plato and Aristotle through to contemporary figures such as Dummett, McDowell, Parfit and Singer.
All major entries are followed by helpful suggestions for further reading, including web links, and contain extensive cross-referencing to aid access and comprehension. This edition also features a brand new guide to the most useful philosophy sites on the internet. The Routledge Dictionary of Philosophy is an invaluable and up-to-date resource for all students of philosophy.

This important update to A. R. Lacey's A Dictionary of Philosophy, first published in 1976 (CH, May'77) continues Lacey's track record for attention to detail. This fourth edition by Proudfoot (emer., Univ. of Reading, UK) and Lacey (emer., Univ. of London) has improved coverage of ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of religion; previous editions demonstrated strengths in logic, metaphysics, philosophy of language, and epistemology. Included is a brief new "Guide to Philosophy Online," a subsection of which lists sites about specific philosophers. Perhaps those should be incorporated into the main entries for philosophers, especially as Web sites are occasionally included there. Another subsection of the guide mentions only JSTOR (CH, Mar'03, 40-3735) as a subscription resource to be used when searching for journal articles, with no mention of major alternatives such as the venerable Philosopher's Index (CH, Apr'00, 37-4217). Entries in the dictionary do not necessarily reflect merely "the latest twists and turns in continuing debates on issues"; rather they provide useful introductions to or clarifications of the immediate term. Short bibliographies of excellent quality follow most terms, and the annotations as to why they are being cited are incredibly helpful. No references appear for some terms, e.g., "zombie," but the "mind (philosophy of)" entry comes with an extensive bibliography and is very well-written. The revisions and additions to the main terms warrant a purchase. Summing Up: Recommended. University libraries supporting lower-level undergraduates and above. D. W. Benedetti Boston University
