The name "Quadrant" has been applied to rock strata of Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian age. However, the true Quadrant is basal Pennsylvanian. Other rocks of central Montana commonly referred to this formation constitute the Big Snowy group and are Mississippian in age. The type section of the Quadrant shows rocks of the Amsden formation occurring above the Madison limestone and below the Quadrant quartzite. The stratigraphic relations, character, and paleontology of the beds commonly called "Quadrant formation" are discussed.
