摘要
摘要
French Postimpressionist and Synthetist Paul Gauguin created paintings with bold colors, as well as drawings, pottery, and wood carvings. This biography discusses his childhood in Peru, education in France, time in the merchant marine and the Franco-Prussian War, introduction to the Impressionist movement and artists such as Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne, exhibition at the Salon and with the Impressionists, move to Denmark with his wife and family, return to Paris, poverty, time in Arles with Vincent van Gogh, and travels abroad to Panama, Martinique, and Tahiti. Sidebars, a glossary, an index, and a phonetics section accompany easy-to-read text and full-color reproductions of Gauguin's artwork, including Four Breton Women, By the Sea, Vision After the Sermon, The Yellow Christ, and The Meal.

Gr 2-5-Clearly intended for reports, the writing in these basic biographies is so bland that these amazing artists come across as not very interesting. The illustrations are usually adequate, but on the pages discussing Picasso's Blue and Rose periods, the image included is not representative of either. While the captions are mostly descriptive, many do not include a title of the work or date. The books refer to ABDO's main Web site for updated Internet links, yet the site is poorly designed for children to navigate. Better options include the "Masterpieces: Artists and Their Works" series (Capstone) and the reliable "Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists" series (Children's Press).-Robin L. This series of artists' profiles balances biography and discussion of particular artworks. The books suffer due to dry writing and limited reproductions (many of the works cited as ""masterpieces"" are not depicted). Some sloppy punctuation and a tendency to define basic vocabulary while glossing over definitions of key artistic movements and terms also limit the books' usefulness. Timeline. Glos., ind.
