Gr 3-5A charming picture-book biography that includes a good dose of French history as well. Croll creates an exciting tale, following Redouté from his Belgian childhood, to Paris during the revolution, to the deathbed of Empress Josephine. However, the fictionalized feelings and dialogue are jarring, and the narrative flow is marred when the story moves abruptly from Redouté's first success to his sudden marriage. French words and names will challenge some readers despite the glossary and pronunciation guide. The design is appealing and effective, although the book's appearance seems a bit young for those who will be able to read it independently. Short text blocks are placed below half-page vignettes that face full-page illustrations. Richly colored and detailed, the well-placed drawings capture the action and drama of the story with stylized figures in period dress. Flowers find their way into Croll's work, including her own rendition of Redouté's paintings. Unfortunately, to see the real thing, readers must look elsewhere. Like its subject, this imaginative study of the "Raphael of Flowers" operates within a small but inspired range. Her orderly yet lush watercolor scenes of the French artist's life (1759-1840) handsomely complement the personality of the hero, who managed a long and brilliant career as a botanical painter despite numerous political and personal upheavals. In her artfully understated text Croll (The Little Snowgirl) traces the historical background, also touching on matters of technique and Redouté's problems with money. She thus adds crucial balance to a life story remarkably blessed with luck as well as talent. Indeed, the theme of perseverance and its rewards permeates this book, as notables Marie-Antoinette, Napoleon and Josephine, and a buckskin-suited John James Audubon pay tribute to the artist and his work. In its gentle sensitivity and careful attention to detail, Croll's book reflects Redouté's own credo: one does best what one loves most, however humble the pursuit. Ages 5-up. (Mar.) Redouté's name is known through the popularity of his rose and lily paintings, but few people know anything about the man who was court-appointed painter to both Marie Antoinette and Empress Josephine, and who said to Napoleon, ``Painting flowers may be something small, but it is what I do best, because it is what I love most.'' Redouté's simple botanical drawings of single flowers were quite revolutionary in the late 18th- and early 19th-centuries when the fashion was for glamorous portraits and mythological scenes. He was not intentionally radical, but painted from a love for the gardens in the abbey near his boyhood home, and later for the gardens of Paris where he went to paint theater scenery. Although the book doesn't include a reproduction of one of Redouté's paintings for those who do not know his work, Croll (The Three Brothers, 1991, etc.) accurately recreates the life of an artist in an age when patronage was the only secure path. The pictures are charming, colorful, and clear, and show interesting details of life--in particular the ladies' fashions over several decades. Very pretty. (bibliography) (Picture book/biography. 5+)

Gr. 2^-5. French painter Pierre-Joseph Redoute(1759^-1840) grew up with an affinity for painting and a curiosity about flowers. At first, there seemed little hope of earning a living painting flowers, but he followed his inclination, made his fortune, and gained great renown, becoming "Painter of Flowers" to Queen Marie Antoinette and later to the empress Josephine. Although Redoute's life might seem an unlikely subject for a young audience, Croll tells her story with such sympathy and so many intriguing details that children as well as adults will find themselves caught up in the artist's story and the era in which he lived. Executed in a picture-book format, this begins with an author's note, a pronunciation guide, and a bibliography. Shaded pencil-and-watercolor illustrations on every page combine warmth of color tones and pleasing formality in composition with an innocent charm in characterization. An unusual and fulfilling illustrated biography for younger children. --Carolyn Phelan
