The trail to Oregon was a road to dreams for many Americans in the mid-1800s. This brief pictorial history of the rapidly disappearing tracks left by those pioneers blends the author's own experiences along the trail today with old maps, guides, and immigrant diaries and journals to skillfully separate historical fact from fiction. The pictorial section, which constitutes fully half of the book, features old paintings compared with similar views and landmarks as they appear today. Tourists will find use for the list of museums and displays relating to the trail, while armchair travelers and history buffs will appreciate the extensive bibliography. A handy fold-out map indicates the locations of key sites along the trail. Recommended both as history of the American West and as a travel guide. Index.
