A ready-reference guide that offers tips to effective communication in a variety of social situations and encounters. Glass deals with topics such as the importance of facial expressions and voice tone, how to function at parties, how to recognize and deal with "toxic communicators," and the correct protocol and greeting to use in different foreign countries. This commonsensical yet simplistic approach should instill in even the most socially insecure individual a degree of self-confidence. Glass' essential message? The beginning of "real" communication starts with a sense of honesty, openness, generosity, and a willingness to learn from others. ~--Jane Jurgens

Glass, a Los Angeles speech pathologist, has written a helpful book for people who have difficulty finding the right things to say. This is not a how-to book on speaking before groups; it is about communicating one-to-one with others. Talking to the boss or to strangers at a party can be nerve-wracking, and Glass gives advice on breathing exercises, facial expression, and physical movements. Barry Farber in Making People Talk ( LJ 6/15/87) gave some of the same advice, but Glass focuses on development of self-esteem and communication skills. The tips on how to talk to handicapped or gravely ill people are useful, as is her list of ways to handle an argument. Good manners, thoughtfulness, and sensitivity are the tenets here.
