From high-level business negotiations to casual conversations among friends, every interpersonal interaction is shaped by cultural norms and expectations. Seldom is this more clearly brought to light than in encounters between people from different cultural backgrounds, when dissimilar communication practices may lead to frustration and misunderstanding. This thought-provoking text presents a new framework for understanding the impact of culture on communication and for helping students build intercultural communication competence. With illustrative examples from around the globe, the book shows that verbal and nonverbal communication involves much more than transmitting a particular message--it also reflects each participant's self-image, group identifications and values, and privacy and relational needs. The book discusses effective intercultural communication from the perspective of IINT (integrative identity negotiation theory). It includes intergroup communication using a mindfulness framework, boundaries/group processes, and ethical issues. The first edition was published in 1999. The purpose is to present this revised and expanded edition to help "students and professionals mindfully build their knowledge and competencies for effective intercultural communication in any setting." The authors suggest that their "updated theoretical framework (integrative identity negotiation theory) reveals how both verbal and nonverbal communication are affected by multilayered facets of identity." The audience includes "students, teachers, and practitioners who would like to integrate knowledge and skills in practicing mindful intercultural communication." Both authors are from California State University, Fullerton. A theoretical discussion underlying intercultural communication notes that due to mobility and technology, people need to abandon ethnocentric attitudes in favor of ethnorelative viewpoints. IINT helps to increase cultural awareness and build skills for better communication. Many immigrants experience culture shock, which some can negotiate while others have great difficulty. Part II introduces the concept of mindfulness to intercultural communication. Using mindfulness techniques will help people to become more attuned to others and willing to share their own vulnerabilities. The authors talk about vertical and horizontal dimensions of individualism vs. collectivism. Individuals must understand the nonverbal rules in the cultures that they come into contact with on a regular basis. It is not easy to build intercultural relationships, but "love attitudes/expressions" and relationship commitment can facilitate lasting friendships. Intercultural ethical issues include cultural responsibility and justice. Mindfulness skills can help with these issues. The book is easy to read and contains numerous tables/figures to clarify the text. The chapters are organized fairly uniformly, with a table of contents, introduction, chapter summary and mindfulness guidelines, and critical thinking and connective application questions. This book does a good job of exploring various aspects of intercultural communication. The use of IINT is a perspective that has a strong research foundation., and the book will be a wonderful addition to the libraries of clinicians and researchers.
