Perceived as precipitating a better world and the collapse of traditional librarianship, the Information Age raises as many questions as it answers. Whatever its portent, it has ethical implications for information users and dispensers. These readings begin with an excerpt from Mill's On Liberty, but most of the rest date from the 1980s and 1990s. Those in the first three sections deal with freedom of information and the pursuit of knowledge; information, technology, and education; and information, rights, and social justice. Those in the fourth and fifth deal specifically with ethics--the relationship of ethics to the Internet and professional ethics--though the concept of information ethics is present throughout. Lending itself more to random sampling or approaching specific topics via the index than to reading cover to cover, the collection affords the pleasure of discovering something to make one stop and think about information and how it affects values and ethics with virtually every sampling.
