Gr 4 Up-Lively, colorful cartoon illustrations help introduce the stories told in these 16 songs from 7 Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Simple piano arrangements and suggested guitar chords are included. The selections lend themselves to dramatic interpretation, thus adding another dimension to their performance. A unique offering that gives youngsters a taste of the humor in these operas.-Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ (c) Copyright 2010. The collection contains sixteen songs from eight Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Langstaff has chosen the most familiar songs and supplemented them with some that may be less familiar to adults but have great appeal to children. Lively illustrations show the traditional characters and settings with appropriately droll humor. The piano arrangements simplify the original orchestrations, and most songs include guitar chords. Gr. 4-8. Sixteen songs from eight operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan are given the deluxe treatment in this well-constructed volume. Black-and-white and color illustrations on heavy, glossy pages, which give the book strong middle-grade appeal, accompany crisp musical notation for both piano and guitar. Editor Langstaff's brief introduction is followed by selections from, among others, H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance. The absence of plot descriptions is disappointing, and although there is an index to song titles, there is none for the operettas represented. Even so, this will be a solid addition to larger music books collections. ~--Janice Del Negro
