K-Gr 3 Put a kid with a pet and you have interesting story possibilities. Add to that Parish's writing skills plus illustrations which complement the text and give context clues for word meaning, and you have a winner of an ``I-Can-Read-Book.'' Children will be able to identify with Todd's desire for a pet and his anguish over selecting just the right one from so many at the Animal Shelter. Gentle lessons are given about why animals are in the Shelter, what happens to them, and how important it is to have a pet neutered. This is a book with a message, and children will no doubt become emotionally involved with the drama of the discarded animals who are being cared for at the Shelter. However, the book is not didactic. It is a well-written story with a controlled vocabulary that young readers can enjoy. Lee Bock, Brown County Public Libraries, Green Bay, Wis. (c) Copyright 2010. By a veteran children's author, a heartwarming story that not only includes a message but is also probably the first easy reader to use the term ""neuter."" Todd bounces up on his birthday because he's sure he's going to find a longed-for cat. The feline paraphernalia he unwraps confirm his hopes, but for the ultimate gift he and his parents must go to the animal shelter. There, Todd is introduced to a few facts on pet care and the many available kittens, and makes an unlikely choice: a standoffish (but lovable) older kitten with a crooked tail who, Todd says, ""needs me. . .And I need him."" Parish introduces several ideas in the context of this simple story: why animals are given away, what happens to them if they are not adopted (""Often we have to put the animals to sleep""), and the importance of neutering both male and female pets. But though their story is written to a purpose, Todd and Scruffy have enough charm to make the medicine go down smoothly. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

Gr. 1-2. When Todd opens his birthday presents-a scratching post, a litter pan, and cat food-he knows his dream of owning a kitten is about to come true. His parents take him down to the animal shelter where he finds a number of choices; seeing the one he knows is right for him, Todd takes the kitty and names him Scruffy. Parish, the author of many favorites including the Amelia Bedelia series, adds information to the story as she simply explains the neutering process. Line drawings dusted with greens and oranges break up a text that is simple enough for first-graders, though it does contain a few difficult words. A boy and a pet finding each other has plenty of heartwarming appeal, however, and new readers will quickly respond. IC. Cats-Fiction / Birthdays-Fiction [CIP] 87-45564
