This third edition is a worthwhile reference tool in which nurses are provided with practical tools for assessments, guidelines for planning interventions, and teaching strategies for the community. With this book, nurses can plan these strategies and interventions regardless of the population they serve, and material covered crosses the lifespan as well. This is an additional resource for nurses in the community. Data collection activities are promoted for outcome analysis, and this is a necessity as all activities and interventions are measured by their outcomes. The value of these outcomes will ultimately impact the fiscal health of an agency. The authors succeed in their effort. The target audience is primarily the nurse providing community-based health and home care services. However, it is also a user-friendly student handbook. An excellent foundation for application of nursing principles in the community is provided, and use of this book in the college/university and then in the work setting is appropriate. The authors are leaders in community-based texts and handbooks. This easy to use book contains material that crosses the age continuum and offers quick references related to common diseases. The size, spiral binding, practical illustrations, and black-and-white sketches reinforce the useful and practical nature of this text. Two important features include the inside cover of common telephone numbers the nurse can complete and the unique back cover/bookmark style for easy reference to content. The book is intended to complement agency policy and procedure manuals, so the "real life" approach to community-based care is quite appropriate. This handbook is a concise reference tool that is practical and current. The variations of community and home based agency operations are considered. This edition includes updated resources from previous editions, which supports replacement. I would encourage any community/home care nurse, regardless of experi ence or background, to refer to this book. Bader Peters Reynolds, RN, MS(CareGivers, Inc.). Copyright 2001, Doody Publishing
