摘要
Cancer Pain Management, Second Edition will substantially advance pain education. The unique combination of authors -- an educator, a leading practitioner and administrator, and a research scientist -- provides comprehensive, authoritative coverage in addressing this important aspect of cancer care. The contributors, acknowledged experts in their areas, address a wide scope of issues. Educating health care providers to better assess and manage pain and improve patientsrsquo; and familiesrsquo; coping strategies are primary goals of this book. Developing research-based clinical guidelines and increasing funding for research is also covered. Ethical issues surrounding pain management and health policy implications are also explored.

Arriving eight years after the publication of the first edition, this book covers a wide range of topics pertinent to the management of pain in pediatric, adult, and geriatric cancer patients. The purpose is to update the reader on new developments in the field of cancer pain management. The entire spectrum is covered, including pain assessment, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, ethical issues, cultural aspects of management, curriculum development, quality improvement projects, and health policy. These topics are both timely and worthy of attention. Many national and international organizations have embarked on cancer pain initiatives. The reader of this book will be able to address these initiatives in a theoretical and practical manner. Although the authors allude to nurses as the target audience, both students and practitioners of many health care disciplines will find this book useful. The authors are clearly experts in their field, representing multiple discipl ines and institutions from across the U.S. The overall appearance of book is very appealing. The figures and tables are clearly illustrated, easy to read, and able to be interpreted apart from the text. The references are extensive and current. The references are extensive and current, including a wide range of health care journals and books. Each chapter stands alone, allowing the reader to focus on a particular area of interest, yet the text flows in a logical sequence from beginning to end. This book is essential for the library of any nurse, whether practitioner, educator or administrator, concerned with care of the cancer patient. The theory and application of cancer pain management is covered in detail. A nurse can find an answer to a specific clinical question, an educator can find a curriculum plan, and an administrator can find an outline of a project for continuous quality improvement (CQI). Readers will find this text invaluable. Mary Dee McEvoy, PhD, RN(Mount Sinai Hosp ital and Medical Center). Copyright 2001, Doody Publishing
