The book is divided into four units that provide up-to-date theoretical and clinical content essential to the practice of oncology nursing: cancer diagnosis, clinical management, treatment modalities, and supportive therapies. Algorithms are provided for assessment and management of oncologic emergencies. A variety of checklists and rating scales are provided for home care/extended care assessment. The book was last published in 1997. The author's stated purpose is "to provide the most current and relevant information needed for nursing care of patients with cancer." The timely and comprehensive content along with a strong clinical focus make the book a valuable educational and reference tool for novice to expert oncology nurses in a variety of practice settings. The book was written for all nurses who contribute to the care of cancer patients, including those on general staff and in academic and advanced practice settings. The author's clinical nurse specialist background, oncology certification, and oncology publishing experience (three prior editions), make her a credible authority in oncology nursing. Twenty-one of the 22 contributing authors have advanced practiced credentials in oncology nursing. The scope of the book is broad, covering malignant cellular growth, cancer risks and prevention, specific management of common cancers, state-of-the-art treatment modalities including clinical trials, and multiple aspects of supportive care including home care and the management of common problems (e.g., fatigue, nutrition, pain, sexuality, psychosocial issues). Among the best features of the text are its large number of tables, figures, and boxes of clinically relevant information. A unique feature, also present in earlier editions, is the inclusion of over 300 multiple-choice questions intended to help prepare for the oncology certification exam. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and a list of additional resources (e.g., literature to recommend to patients, Web sites, support groups, personal care items). The book makes a significant contribution to the field of oncology nursing as an up-to-date reference and educational text. The new edition is justified by the added chapter on genetics, updated statistics, current management protocols and treatment modalities, and the new chapter features of geriatric considerations, patient teaching priorities, disease and treatment-related complications, future directions, and advances in therapy.
