This comprehensive book covers basic principles of cancer in small animals, the approach to cancer, diagnosis, staging, and management of cancer, and includes detailed discussions of specific cancers from head to tail. A companion website provides further information as well as references. The purpose is to provide general practitioners and students a ready source of information for the best approach to and management of veterinary patients with cancer. This goal is indeed worthy, as a wide range of information, such as sites offering radiation or the current protocol for bisphosphonate use, often needed for cancer patients are also often difficult to locate. Veterinary practitioners and students are the intended audience. For some topics, the information is more detailed than most general practitioners would need, but overall the book succeeds at reaching its audience. This book covers a wide range of aspects of oncology, from the basic science and principles of cancer development and biology to diagnostic, imaging, and therapeutic modalities to supportive care to discussion of specific tumor types. While not a feature many general practitioners may be seeking, the chapters on the biology of cancer as well as epidemiology, statistics, and clinical trials, are outstanding. They are clearly written and to the point and make these challenging topics accessible to students and general veterinarians, who may very well find that reading these chapters improves their understanding and management of their patients' diseases. The book uses many charts and tables to consolidate information for easier access. Some of the tables for drug dosages can be a little difficult to follow across the columns, as there as not divisions between the rows, but overall they are an added benefit to the book. The comprehensive references noted in the chapters are found online (likely to keep the book at a reasonable length). A unique feature is a list of selected references at the end of every section with a brief description of each, making it easier for readers to decide which to seek out. Overall, the information in this book will be useful to veterinarians and may educate them on newer topics in the field as well, such as PET scans, chemoembolization, etc. One area that could have used greater emphasis was the use of the PhaSeal system for chemosafety in practice. While this product is mentioned, the benefits that it provides over other means available for the private practice setting are not made clear. Lastly, while one cytology image erroneously appears twice (as prostatic carcinoma and lymphoma), in general the images are of excellent quality and helpfulness. The quality of this book is equal to other books in the veterinary oncology literature in the expertise of the contributing authors, the information provided, and the quality of the images. The authors have done an outstanding job of summarizing many of the recent findings in veterinary oncology, as well as discussing the unknowns. In this way, this book will be of interest not only to general practitioners and students, but also to oncology residents and specialists.
