In Donaldson's guide, the four seasons offer abundant opportunity to concoct colognes and facial tonics, assemble decorative pomanders or herbal bath bouquets, prepare culinary treats, and create assorted craft items inspired by the scented flowers and herbs that grow in many gardens today. Among the projects are simple-to-make rolled beeswax candles, a flowering pot of lily of the valley, and narcissus bulbs in a pretty bowl. A spicy cake recipe promises to fill the indoors with a fine aroma during winter, and a sauce with tomato and basil will do the same during late summer days. Donaldson writes enthusiastically, offering basic instructions for various little treasures that enrich the surroundings and convey good thoughts to anyone who receives them as gifts.
