For kids, staying up at night is fun. For many animals and plants, however, being awake at night is necessary to stay alive. This book is teeming with activities, experiments and information about animal and plant life after dark. Kids will discover why owls hunt at night, but hawks hunt during the day. They'll learn about night prowlers, night migration, night senses and nature's night lights on the bottom of the ocean floor. Simple experiments and activities -- that can be done during the day or at night -- reveal many fascinating facts about nature at night.

Gr 3-5-A user-friendly introduction. Interspersed throughout the text are activities that, for the most part, children can perform without adult supervision. Nighttime sky watching is discussed and children are given directions to make a handy star scope. In a section on nocturnal animals, students are introduced to echolocation of bats. There is also brief mention of daytime vs. nighttime hunters. Throughout, sidebars and dialogue balloons offer many interesting factoids. However, there is some unevenness. Owls have their own chapter and activity while all desert life is summed up in one section. Illustrations, looking amateurish at times, are nevertheless descriptive and helpful. Jerry Emory's Nightprowlers (Harcourt, 1994) and Jim Pipe's The Giant Book of Creatures of the Night (Copper Beech, 1998) offer some of the same information, but the duplication is limited and all three titles are complementary. Providing basic information, this book introduces readers to the night sky and to nocturnal animals, insects, and plants. Brief text and sidebars on heavily illustrated pages cover a lot of ground but don't delve very deeply. Both daytime and nighttime activities are somewhat limited, mainly instructing readers to observe their surroundings; only a few demonstrate concepts and foster deeper understanding. Ind. While many of the night sky activities in this book, subtitled ``Exploring Nature After Dark with Activities, Experiments and Information,'' are more applicable for children who live in the country than for urban dwellers, older students will enjoy browsing this compendium of facts about astronomy and animals. Moon-watching, stargazing, information on nocturnal animals, bioluminescence, night flowering plants, night migration, and more are discussed. Activities include dissecting an owl pellet, measuring plant growth, and making a simple star scope. Interesting and practical. (diagrams, index) (Nonfiction 8-12)

Gr. 3^-6. Hickman introduces readers to what happens in nature after dark through a variety of daytime and nighttime activities and experiments. Topics include why stars are visible at night; nocturnal creatures and their sleeping and feeding habits; and the night life found in one's own backyard as well as the desert and ocean. Explanations of scientific phenomena, such as why fireflies glow in the dark, are generally easy to follow, although the descriptions of photosynthesis and how night vision works are confusing; and Hickman neglects to explain the interchangeable names for constellations, which differ in text and maps (Ursula Major/Big Dipper, for example). Activities include stargazing and how to find and identify night creatures, but some experiments are not for the squeamish (dissecting owl pellets). The illustrations are pleasant and nicely colored but lack detail, which lessens their educational value; they also endow with deceptively benevolent expressions such potentially dangerous animals as raccoons--though the book does warn kids to take adults along for the night activities. --Shelle Rosenfeld
