Gr 4-8-- Twenty-five environmental leaders (24 men and 1 woman) from Henry David Thoreau to Rachel Carson are discussed. Well-known figures such as John Muir, George Washington Carver, Theodore Roosevelt, John James Audubon, Luther Burbank, Jacques-Yves Cousteau are included as well as those who are lesser known: Aldo Leopold, Gilbert White, Liberty Bailey. With the appearance of naturalists, conservationists, and environmentalists, it's surprising that Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall are omitted. Each section is crisply written, providing a comprehensive summary of the individual's lifetime events and achievements. The bibliography lists books written by and about each person; there is no summary table of important events or list of relevant groups/organizations. This well-written collective biography is not intended to replace more comprehensive and powerful volumes. It is a useful resource for school and public libraries, illustrated with black-and-white photographs. --Renee Blumenkrantz, Davis Community Library, Bethesda, MD (c) Copyright 2010.
