Illustrated with black-and-white photographs, the clearly organized text presents a historical perspective on people with disabilities; examines current therapy and treatment; and discusses psychological concerns, legal issues, and physical activity. Perhaps because the term 'physically challenged' encompasses a broad range of conditions, the volume lacks depth and focus. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 6-9. This discusses a broadly defined group: "those persons who have physical defects or disorders that keep them from performing some of the everyday tasks and activities others of their age routinely perform." Are such diverse conditions as deafness, diabetes, Down syndrome, and the rare Treacher Collins, a genetic disease, profitably considered together? Yes, because what unites the chapters is a focus on the psychology of living with these challenges and on the adaptations used to help individuals, both adults and children, participate in daily life. An appendix on adaptive aids and an extensive list of addresses for further information on specific conditions will serve report writers well. (Reviewed August 1994)0791000737Mary Harris Veeder
