Gr 5 Up-- Carefully researched, well organized, and well written, these books have unbiased, unsensationalized accounts of the two disasters cited in the titles. Chapters are divided by sub-headings for easier reading. Throughout, individual articles that focus on important people or elements related to the subject are blocked off from the main text. Average quality black-and-white drawings and photographs contribute to the readability. Chernobyl nicely supplements Laurence Pringle's Nuclear Energy: Troubled Past, Uncertain Future (Macmillan, 1989) and Joel Helgerson's Nuclear Accidents (Watts, 1988), both written at a slightly higher reading level. The Irish Potato Famine covers Irish history leading to the famine of the 1840s, the actual cause of the potato blight, and the results of the famine. It concludes with a chapter on world hunger throughout history. Two good sources for reports. --Marilyn Long Graham, Jacksonville Public Libraries, FL (c) Copyright 2010.
