《书目》(Booklist)书评
Compiled by a librarian, this dictionary is aimed at horse lovers, crossword-puzzle enthusiasts, trivia buffs, and historians. It lists 1,307 horses famous in literature, mythology, history, television, radio, and film. The horses are listed alphabetically by name, with brief information on each. Each horse entry is numbered. The names of owners and other people associated with the horses, movie and book titles, and so on are integrated alphabetically and refer the reader to the appropriate animal. This helpful system enables one to look under Queen Elizabeth II, for example, to find a list of horses she has owned, or under Oklahoma to find the name of Curley's horse in the 1955 film. Following the dictionary is a subject index, which provides entry numbers under such broad categories as Comic Strip, Comic Book, and Cartoon Horses and Racehorses, Harness. Some large categories, such as Movie Horses, list too many entry numbers to be useful. The volume concludes with a bibliography, offering more than 70 titles for further reading. Though much of the information here can be found scattered in a variety of other reference sources, there is no other work that brings it all together in a single volume. The Horse's Name Was . . . may not be a necessary purchase, but it's a trivia gold mine, and libraries should buy accordingly. (Reviewed May 1, 1993)
