Work today has taken on diverse meanings as corporate America has changed well beyond what our parents knew and accepted. And the ability to cope positively with differences--in companies and in their people--has become the hallmark of a good manager, admittedly a rara avis in today's world. Clinical psychologist and Harvard professor Benfari transcends the now-popular Myers-Briggs scale of typing personalities (MBTI) by delving into the ways people handle conflict and power and their needs structures and then integrating those three building blocks of management style with the MBTI. Dealing in abstract theories is often relegated to the philosophers; therefore, probable but invented case histories are included and resolved. Even General Patton, as an example of the stereotypical hero-warrior manager, doesn't escape scrutiny. Tests in the appendixes help further refine and make real Benfari's convictions.
