Now in its third revision, A Basic Music Library continues to be the best list of basic music scores and recordings for developing and evaluating music collections. The third edition lists more than 7,000 recordings and 3,000 printed scores as part of the more than 10,000 total entries. All the entries are selected by experts (contributors are listed in the front matter). An important new feature is a more detailed inclusion of popular and traditional music worldwide. In order to help selection officers make selections appropriate for the various music collections, a three-tiered ranking system has been built into the book. The book's usefulness as a guide to individual listening is probably limited due to the lack of detailed performance information, but as a guide to collection building it is unequaled. Highly recommended for all library music collections. R. L. Wick; University of Colorado at Denver
