This excellent sourcebook on sex/gender issues in education provides educators with materials for both preservice and in-service teachers. The dual purposes are to provide the historical, theoretical, and research bases for nonsexist education and to demonstrate applications in classrooms. The basic premise--that "contemporary education functions to maintain a system that supports and perpetuates sexism (as well as racism)"--is demonstrated by the historical content and outlines of research findings. McCormick wrote the book out of a concern that the treatment of gender in the context of multiculturalism is often inadequate. She breaks with some feminists in dealing with what Diane Pollard has termed the "multiple statuses" of girls and women by including race, social class, and age in the discussion. With a mind toward the learner, McCormick provides overviews, summaries, review questions, research/reflective activities, classroom activities, and resources including an extensive bibliography. She provides specific examples of curricular transformations, including an ambitious array of elementary and secondary lesson ideas that include objectives, instructional strategies, and resources. The final chapter looks at equity within the societal context and urges teachers to be proactive in promoting nonsexist and culturally inclusive education.
