Seldom has the environment played so large a role in a thriller as in Erik Skjoldbjaerg's impressively atmospheric film debut. Stellan Skarsgard stars as a Swedish homicide detective dispatched to neighboring Norway to help the local cops solve the murder of a teen girl-a task made more difficult by guilt over a grievous accident and lack of sleep from the midnight arctic sun. Respectably remade in 2002 by the "Batman" trilogy's Christopher Nolan, the gloomy original still shines brighter. For police procedural aficionados. [See Trailers, LJ 6/1/14.] (c) Copyright 2014.
