Before the word Felliniesque came to represent his later surrealistic excesses, virtuoso director Federico Fellini defined the term with this whimsical yet ultimately heartbreaking tale of a brutish strongman (Anthony Quinn) who "buys" a slow-witted waif (Giuletta Masina) as a clown for his traveling act-until her infatuation with a high-wire performer (Richard Baseheart) trips things up. With nearly pristine picture and sound, the requisite scholarly commentary, an autobiographical documentary, and an introduction by Martin Scorsese, this double-disc release is recommended for all serious collections.
