When Angus and Callie McCraken convert to the Mormon faith, they decide to emigrate to America to be with their fellow believers. Unfortunately, traveling west in 1857 is a perilous journey, and Angus is soon killed in an attack by Cheyenne Indians. Callie, left alone with her three young children, finds herself at the mercy of the elements. Praying for help, she is dismayed when her assistance comes in the form of a wounded Cheyenne Indian warrior named Three Elk. Realizing that her Christian beliefs will not allow her hatred to continue, Callie has to rethink her attitude toward Three Elk. This is a wonderful book, with brilliant historical detail. However, by far the best feature of Sorensen's (Chainbreakers, Deseret, 1993) novel is the fully three-dimensional character of Callie, a woman who survives the pressures put upon her not only through prayer but also through hard work and determination. Highly recommended. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
