Boulanger's influence on 20th-century music cannot be overestimated. She was the consummate teacher to her 92nd year. She was able to teach composition to those as different in style and temperament as Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, Philip Glass, and Quincy Jones and to communicate in the most articulate way-through conversation and performance-the musical wisdom of her extraordinarily perceptive and sensitive ears and mind. These ``conversations'' come from five years of ``intermittent encounters'' in preparation for a film and a series of radio interviews, but the author has woven them in a seamless ribbon of insight into one of the great musical figures of our age. A book for all who can respect and admire the work of a truly fine mind; a good alternative to the massive biography by Leonie Rosenstiel, Nadia Boulanger (CH, Oct '82).-J.P.
