Born in Spain and active in Naples, Jusepe de Ribera was a major artist of the Italian Baroque and a harbinger of the Golden Age of Spanish painting. This lavish but reasonably priced catalog was published in conjunction with an international loan exhibition of 72 paintings and 34 drawings held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the artist's birth. In addition to six essays (in English) by eminent American, Spanish, and Italian scholars that discuss aspects of Ribera's art and life, the volume contains entries on 124 works accompanied by 167 illustrations (including 106 good-quality color plates), documentary appendix, and concordance. Each entry includes descriptive commentary, provenance, exhibitions list, and references. This sumptuous and well-produced volume is both an exhibition catalog and the best current "monograph" on this important and fascinating artist. The book will be attractive to general readers and useful to scholars. W. E. Wallace; Washington University
