摘要
Published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by, and held at, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this volume examines the American (i.e. British colonial) manifestations of the European rococo style. Following an introductory chapter, separate chapters are devoted to architecture, engravings, silver, and furniture, plus iron, glass, and porcelain grouped together as factory products. Illustrated are 173 objects (many in color) that are part of the exhibition, and some 50 related objects. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Published in conjunction with a 1992 exhibition of the same name at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Heckscher, curator of American Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan, and Bowman, curator of Decorative Arts at Los Angeles, are highly regarded scholars in the field. The book and the exhibition offer an analysis unparalleled in its precision and detail of this high moment in American art. Following an introduction, the chapters of the book echo the main themes of the exhibition: architectural carving, engravings, silver, furniture, cast iron, glass, and porcelain, with some mention of firearms and textiles. There is a checklist of the 713 objects in the exhibition; all are included among the 250 illustrations, 82 of which are in color. Compared with the admirable book published in conjunction with the bicentennial exhibition at the Yale University Art Gallery, American Art: 1750-1800, Towards Independence, ed. by C. Montgomery and P.E. Kane (CH, Oct'76), this volume is richer for being more narrowly focused. Handsomely produced, it includes an exhaustive bibliography of 187 entries. For students of American decorative arts and serious collectors. O. Overby; University of Missouri-Columbia
