摘要
Determine the distance from New York to Tokyo using a string, a yardstick, and a globe...find out if one's body temperature changes throughout the day...discover how tall a tree is by measuring the height of a friend. The ideas introduced in this book will help students perform challenging, educational, and fun science fair projects. All that is needed are some simple materials, most of which can be found around the home or school. Then one will be ready to learn about measuring areas and volumes, temperatures and heat, times and speed, and more.

Gr. 6^-12. As with other books in the Science Projects series, this volume pares down extensive, valuable, and complex information using clear descriptions and simple terminology. Every section covers a different category related to measurement, from describing what measurement is to exploring how it relates to mass, area, volume, and temperature. Each chapter provides an often fascinating history of different measurements and how they evolved into accepted standards, as well as project ideas. Tables scattered through the text present additional data, and helpful illustrations expand on the explanations. The experiments always seem grounded in extensive knowledge and experience. The introduction encourages students to get adult supervision when trying the experiments and discusses the limitations of taking projects for a science fair directly from a book. Such advice enhances Gardner's credibility. An effective, useful resource, with further readings and a list of suppliers appended. --Roger Leslie
