Gr 2-4Fun games and easy-to-make projects combined with good layouts and colorful illustrations make these titles of interest to children. The instructions are generally easy to follow, though at times another step or two would have made the projects easier. For example, in telling readers to make sure a marked corner stays fixed, why not suggest tacking it down? Another drawback is that the intended audience for these titles may be slightly older than the children depicted in the photographs. However, these creative activities for academic subjects are worth adding to your collection even if they may be best directed to young readers willing to seek assistance if necessary.Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt. These volumes are a useful resource for math teachers seeking a variety of engaging, hands-on activities at different levels of difficulty. The books include instructions and hints for each project and suggestions for related activities. Occasionally directions, diagrams, and full-color illustrations are unclear, and answers are not always included--making the books less accessible to younger, inexperienced mathematicians. Gr. 2^-5. From the British Math for Fun series, these books introduce activities that engage children in a playful way with aspects of mathematics. In Shapes, projects include making grid-based board games, tessellating patterns, conical hats, and tangram puzzles. Points includes activities based on plotting coordinates, measuring angles, and identifying types of symmetry. Each colorful spread includes a photo of the main project as well as a number of smaller line-and-watercolor pictures. Good supplemental materials for teachers or parents looking for math activities. --Carolyn Phelan
