Gr 10 Up-- This series entry reads like a PhD dissertation, without the apparatus to make the text meaningful. Of the four maps included, only one is of much help in locating geographical references--and it lacks coordinates. The index is good, but the glossary is weak. Trout begins with the statement that,``The thread of Maya history stretches from antiquity to today.'' Readers can figure out today; but what is ``antiquity''? Much of the narrative is peppered with references that will keep students flipping pages for elucidation. It is easier to browse through the many, good quality, superbly informative black-and-white and full-color photographs and illustrations than to work doggedly at a straight read-through. Because the author has included complex sequences about the Mayan calendar, numbering system, and chronology of rulers, it'd be a good idea for anyone interested in this subject to preread The Mystery of the Ancient Maya (McElderry, 1985) by Carolyn Meyer and Charles Gallenkamp. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield (c) Copyright 2010. Photographs. While attempting to explain what occurs during a clash of cultures, the book is somewhat judgmental - with sensationalized depictions of Mayan sacrifices and torture. The format makes the material difficult to read; the replicas of woodcuts and examples of Mayan art are excellent. Index. (c) Copyright 2010.
