Gr 4-5-A survey of the Mayan Indians from their beginnings to the present. For a younger audience than the ``Indians of North America'' series (Chelsea), this book uses some of the same illustrations, including an insert of full-color photographs of Mayan figurines from the island of Jaina. The typeface is thin and pale, and the left margins are very wide. This, coupled with a rambling text, makes for slow reading about a fascinating culture. There's already so much material available on the subject that this sloppy series entry is hardly an essential purchase.-Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA (c) Copyright 2010. Black-and-white photographs, reproductions, and an insert of color plates depicting native art enhance the somewhat dry accounts of Native-American life, which trace the history and customs of each tribe.
