This collection of Turok's powerful black-and-white photographs is a collaborative project between Ediciones Era and Aperture, the U.S. publisher. Aperture has published an English-language edition of the work in the United States. The 64 photographs in this volume were shot over the last two decades in and around San Crist¢bal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mxico. The sole text is an introduction by poet and playwright Francisco Alvarez Qui¤ones, written in both Spanish and English. Qui¤ones, Turok's friend and fellow transplant, describes the outrage with which Chiapans first greeted Turok's unabashed recording of their lives on his arrival in 1973. Judging by the intimacy of portraits of townspeople shot in the 1980s and 1990s, Turok has since become a familiar character. Some of the photographs capture affecting and mysterious scenes. Others document the communities and physical landscape of Chiapas. Images of Zapatistas, the circus, carnival dancers, religious processions, and family portraits work together to create a strong and detailed portrait of Turok's adopted home. This bilingual volume is a good addition to public libraries serving Latino communities and to academic libraries with collections on photography.ÄKate Connell, San Francisco P.L. (c) Copyright 2010.
