摘要
This maternity text prepares students to fully meet the needs of clients, and to master the challenges of contemporary maternity nursing practice. Significant emphasis is placed on women's health, encompassing violence against women, health problems, sexual health and family planning. A heightened family focus centres on family members, education and interaction with the infant. The text introduces readers to the issues they're likely to encounter in actual nursing practice, including addictive disorders in pregnancy, adolescent pregnancy, and infectious diseases. Key terms, critical thinking questions, assessment guidelines, client teaching guidelines and research highlights are included. Chapters cover critical thinking and the nurse process, violence against women and home care are incorporated into this edition.

The 18th edition of this highly regarded textbook contains major revisions that reflect current standards of practice, technology, and nursing care. The introductory unit with contemporary descriptions of nursing, family health, and reproduction is followed by a unit on biophysical aspects of human reproduction. The remaining six units on the assessment and management of women's health; women in the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods; and women with high-risk maternal and perinatal conditions provide extensive physiopathologic rationale for the nursing functions. The overall purpose is "to enable students to understand the importance of current issues and their impact on the maternal/perinatal specialty." The authors state their intent is that "today's students will take this knowledge and incorporate it into the care they provide." The authors targeted audience is students. The extensive physiological rationale provided makes it an excellent reference for graduate stude nts studying women's health. It is an excellent reference for undergraduate students and practicing nurses. This text has several unique features. It includes interdisciplinary care paths and nursing care plans that are introduced by a statement of prioritized goals. Each unit concludes with critical thinking exercises and NCLEX-type questions. Several assessment tools are included. Color is used effectively. The thorough descriptions of physiopathologic rationale provide the reader with the sound scientific information needed to make nursing decisions about assessment and nursing management. Pertinent, current research studies with critical comments by the authors are included in each chapter. The format of topic introduction, tables, boxed highlights, and chapter summaries make this a user-friendly textbook. Joyce A. French, PhD, RN(Grand Valley State University).
