《学校图书馆杂志》(School Library Journal)书评
Gr 4-6A description of the major types of downhill movements of soil or snow. Organized into six short chapters, the book begins with an introduction to the categories of mass wasting. The remainder concentrates specifically on landslides, slumps, creep, and avalanches, the factors that influence them, and preventive measures that scientists can take to predict the downhill movement of soil and prevent disasters. Clear, full-color photographs illustrate the text effectively. With the help of the pictures, many readers will find that much of what is being discussed is familiar to them. Words that are included in the glossary are italicized in the text. This short, readable book not only provides a solid introduction to the subject, but also gives basic information that may be difficult to locate in other sources, especially for this grade level.Michele Snyder, Chappaqua Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. 《儿童读物杂志》(Horn Book)书评
Goodwin opens the book with a description of a landslide he witnessed as a child. Through the use of good analogies, the well-organized text goes on to compare landslides, slumps, creep, and avalanches, and then concisely explains the mechanism responsible for each. A few of the color photographs are dark, but most are adequate. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 4^-6. This volume, from the First Books series, introduces several types of landslides as well as avalanches. Illustrated with photographs, most in color, the book discusses the factors that contribute to slides and how they can sometimes be prevented. Goodwin describes famous landslides of the past, including Gros Ventre in Wyoming, Crawford Notch in New Hampshire, Ranrahirca-Yungay in Peru, and Vaiont Dam in Italy, as well as a landslide in the Adirondack Mountains, which the author witnessed as a child. A clear, well-organized introductory book on the subject. --Carolyn Phelan
