Gr 4-6This Italian import examines the lives of people living in various areas of the world. This mass of data is organized by broad geographical location with separate sections on religion, language, food and dress, and the arts. Material is presented in both text and illustration, from ancient traditions to modern-day activities, integrating history, ideas, conflicts, and popular culture. The oversized format combines a general overview of an area with numerous illustrations and descriptive captions scattered across each overcrowded, double-page spread. General in nature, these captions provide brief sound bites of information. Endpapers showing flags of the world round out the presentation. The facts are current, keeping pace with political and geographic changes, but the maps are small with little detail or definition. Report writers will have difficulty collecting much in-depth information about any one culture. The book's appeal will be to dedicated browsers interested in learning more about the similarities and differences of various people.Diane Nunn, Richard E. This cultural atlas does a yeomanly job of bringing to light the crazy quilt of ethnic and linguistic groups, their associated art, clothes, architecture, culture--and makes a convincing argument that it isn't such a small world after all. Each region is introduced with a brief history highlighting particular moments or themes. Peppering every spread are good situational maps and illustrations of the various peoples who reside there, often in traditional garb and standing by examples of indigenous architecture. While occasionally stooping to absurd abbreviations--the ``Irish troubles'' can't be clarified in three dozen words--the authors conjure up fabulous images of Mongolian tsam dances, six-story mud buildings in Yemen, Karagoz shadow theater, and the stave churches of Norway, and challenge readers to sally forth and discover these wondrous places for themselves.
