For mystery fans with a yearning for Hollywood's bygone glory days, Baxt's celebrity-studded series will hold strong appeal. His latest effort stars Hollywood legends Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, who become involved in a bit of amateur detecting when the latest victim of a spate of kidnappings is one of Lombard's proteges. With the help of homicide dick Herb Villon--and a few humorously helpful hints from W. C. Fields and Groucho Marx--the couple solves the case despite the distractions of moviemaking, partygoing, and Tinseltown gossipmongering. Baxt again evokes the glamorous ambience of an era when the big studios ruled and movie stars were still discovered at Schwab's soda fountain. Some of the dialogue is trite and downright silly (not to mention politically incorrect), there's an overabundance of name-dropping, and the characters seem overplayed, but hidden among the flaws is an intriguing little mystery. Good fun for the starstruck set. --Emily Melton

The latest addition to Baxt's vintage Hollywood series pits the illustrious Gable and Lombard against kidnappers who have been targeting babies of the stars. A clever plot, witty innuendo, and plenty of the Hollywood greats for company. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
