Gr 1-6-- Using the same format that she employed to interpret Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride (Greenwillow, 1985), Parker presents Whittier's well-known Civil War poem. A stage-setting preface, a map, the poem itself, and some concluding notes to explain references in the text are combined with the illustrator's instantly recognizable artwork. Brief biographical sketches of the poet and of Stonewall Jackson are included as well. The poem, with the accompanying historical notes, provides good supplementary material for social-studies units. In her preface, Parker mentions the controversy over whether or not the memorialized incident ever occurred. Narrative poems like this one are good choices for illustration, and Parker's deceptively simple style works successfully with Whittier's verse. A well-crafted volume for libraries with a demand for illustrated poems or material for whole-language classrooms. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA (c) Copyright 2010. Generations of American children have recited Whittier's familiar couplet: ``Shoot if you must this old gray head, / But spare your country's flag, she said.'' Just as she did for Paul Revere's Ride , Parker has revitalized this story of an old woman who defied Confederate troops by displaying the Union flag. Signature tidy line drawings brightened with color wash reflect both a keen appreciation of the subject and considered attention to kid-pleasing detail. Families who visit Antietam and other Civil War battlefields or watch the PBS Civil War series will particularly enjoy the endpaper illustrations of Civil War flags, the concise and informative description of the setting, stet comma and engaging brief biographies of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson and poet Whittier. Readers will also appreciate the helpful definitions of terms like ``famished hoard'' used in the poem. Ages 6-up. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Parker surrounds the well-known Civil War poem with information and sets it firmly in reality. At the end of the book are military and historical notes and short biographies of Stonewall Jackson and Whittier. Full of period details, Parker's signature illustrations in watercolor, colored pencil, and black pen are arranged tidily above lines of poetry on each page. From HORN BOOK 1992, (c) Copyright 2010. /*STARRED REVIEW*/ Ages 5-9. Set in Frederick, Maryland during the Civil War, Whittier's famous poem features Frietchie, the elderly woman who defied Confederate orders (" `Shoot if you must, this old gray head, / But spare your country's flag,' she said.") and flaunted her flag in front of Stonewall Jackson (" `Who touches a hair of yon gray head / Dies like a dog! March on!' he said."). Frietchie and Jackson appear together in a vignette on the title page, paired for their portrait like two actors lining up to take a bow. Parker's pen-and-marker artwork offers clean, white pages and clear, uncluttered compositions that illustrate the poem with a fitting lack of fuss. While the illustrations are undoubtedly better because of the artist's research into the period, readers benefit from her scholarship in more direct ways, for Parker provides excellent notes on the setting, the general, the poet, the war, and the question of whether the events dramatized in the poem ever took place. Parents and teachers will find this a good starting place for discussions of the fine line between history and legend, as well as an early introduction to the Civil War. Though some libraries already have the picture book version illustrated by Paul Galdone, this offers more in terms of background information as well as eye appeal.
