The authors of this book take the reader through every phase of the grant-writing cycle, offering details, examples, and relevant tools. Dividing the process into 10 steps, each covered in a separate chapter, the book offers practical advice and easy-to-follow suggestions appropriate for every type of library. Highlights include a detailed strategic planning procedure, a process for selecting the right grant, writing the RFP and parts of a typical grant application, and implementing the project once it is funded (many manuals stop with the application process). There is a section of two-page spreads featuring real success stories. The accompanying CD-ROM contains these success stories and all of the book's checklists, worksheets, and templates, which can be downloaded and adapted to a specific situation. The glossary, bibliography, and index enhance its usefulness. This book should be at the side of every grant-writing librarian. --Rochelle Glantz Copyright 2006 Booklist

Grants for Libraries is like the Boy Scouts' field manual when it comes to grant-writing and development: it is an essential, authoritative, step-by-step guidebook to securing the funding your library needs. Grant specialists Gerding (Arizona State Lib., Archives, and Public Records; âÇ£Bringing in the MoneyâÇ columnist for Public Libraries) and MacKellar, a library consultant who has written numerous nationally funded grant proposals, thoroughly cover the grant-writing process, including determining need, researching funding, identifying objectives, measuring outcomes, and classifying types of grants. There are also helpful examples of winning grants, tips on grant follow-up protocol, and clear, concise charts, tables, illustrations, and other graphics. Especially useful for both novices and professionals are important chapters on partnerships and implementing and sustaining grants, topics not often covered in grant-writing courses. The section on types of grants may help those in niche grant markets and eliminate confusion for the grant newcomer. Including a CD-ROM with practice templates and sample proposal tools, this essential âÇ£how-toâÇ manual makes a complex topic comprehensible. Grab it and go âÇ£grantingâÇ !--April Davis, Oakton, VA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. All rights reserved.
