As an author's note explains, ``reddle'' (a red clay) was sold in centuries past in rural England by simple folk to farmers who used it for marking sheep. Here, a brother and sister lost on the heath during a blizzard on Christmas Eve are rescued by a ``reddlewoman.'' She uses magic to summon St. Nick, who sees the children safely home. Lewis writes with the pen of an angel; his imagery (a ``ragged tooth sky,'' ``a violent snowstorm... bucketing out the sky,'' ``horses [that] whisper steam in their stalls'') is sheer beauty. And the snow-softened landscapes and shadowy interiors of Kelley's moody, expressive pastels create a setting worthy of the tale. Ages 5-up. (Oct.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

On a snowy Christmas Eve, Will and Liddy become lost on the heath and are rescued by Wee Mary Fever, an old woman who conveniently lures St. Nicholas to her caravan to take the children safely home. Illustrated with appropriately mysterious and haunting artwork in pastels, the story stretches plausibility with the incongruous appearance of St. Nick. From HORN BOOK 1994, (c) Copyright 2010. Two children are lost in a blizzard while they are on their way home on Christmas Eve in early 20th-century England. They try to take a shortcut through the heath but fall into a large hole where they are found by a strange woman, Wee Mary Fever, and her red fire-cat. Wee Mary is a reddle-seller, who digs up the deep red clay from the heaths and peddles it to sheep farmers. The children have heard frightening stories about the strange old woman, but they come to trust her, and Wee Mary uses her magic to get the children home. She blows red dust into the night and casts a spell that causes the dust to become a bright red moon. The moon attracts St. Nicholas who comes to Wee Mary's door and agrees to carry the sleeping children home. When they awaken the next morning their parents tell them they dreamed the whole thing, but the red stockings hanging on the mantle tell another story. Lewis's (The Frog Princess, p. 1132, etc.) tale is hauntingly evocative of the mysterious heaths and an age when magic was closer to Earth than it is now. (Fiction/Picture book. 5+)
《书目》(Booklist)书评
Ages 4-8. On a wild, snowy Christmas Eve, two lost children are sheltered by a mysterious old woman on the English heath. They fear she's the scary reddlewoman they've heard tell about, but she cares for them and, with the help of St. Nicholas, sees them safely home. The St. Nicholas character doesn't seem integral to the story (perhaps because the point of view switches for a while from that of the children to that of the adults), but Lewis' story combines the casual intimacy of the oral tradition with a vividly poetic imagery ("It was said in the long-tongued towns that she had a heart of iron and a bloodred face as wrinkled as the sea"). The framed, soft pastel illustrations convey the mystery and the coziness of the strange outsider, the reddlewoman, who lives somewhere between dream, legend, and home.
