Gr 1-3Quiet, well-chosen words describe the gathering of the animals to witness Jesus's birth. As Mary and Joseph settle into the stable, the verse sets the scene: "The flute of a Cuckoo piped music/On the rump of Burro Brown,/And a spider wrote an enchanting note/On the hem of Mary's gown." The text mentions many of the beasts present, as they observe the first hours of the baby's life. When Joseph bids them, "Go, all of you/Who grace the blessed Earth,/To every Sister and Brother Beast/Tell them you marked His birth," the pace of the poem quickens, as the creatures hurry to spread the word. Somewhat reminiscent of Margery Facklam's Only a Star (Eerdmans, 1996), this book focuses on the animals. The oil paintings, dominated by tones of tan and brown, depict the beasts in poses true to their nature. Mary is a young girl, looking tired and somber from both her long journey and the birth. Joseph appears bedraggled and drawn. The high point is the dramatic and spectacular illustration of the "great green rush of Hummingbirds" as they fly from the center of a two-page spread and light streams out behind them. Lewis tells the story of the Nativity through an extended poem about the responses of the animals to Jesus' birth. Many of the images are more poetic than accurate: hummingbirds don't travel in flocks nor are they indigenous to the Middle East. Bairley's paintings use earth tones to striking effect, although Mary looks a bit too contemporary in some scenes. From HORN BOOK 1997, (c) Copyright 2010. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Ages 4^-8. Children who already know the story of Jesus' birth in a stable will delight in Lewis' poetry, which retells the awe-inspiring events with the animals being the first to know the good news. Some of the animals, such as the cat and the crow, watch quietly ("Together Old Feather-and-Fur beheld / The Mother in half-moon light"); others immediately start rejoicing ("Jerusalem Crickets spread / 'Joy to the Fields'--a Cricket carol"). Illustrations, painted on a surface composed of oil and real sand, are softly realistic. Mary, Joseph, and Jesus look like people we might know, and the animals and the setting appear natural and historically accurate. A reverent, tender look at the wonders of a night almost 2,000 years ago. --Susan Dove Lempke
